Kent League – Premier Division – 3rd March 2012
Cray rued a series of first half missed chances to see a spirited Lordswood side grab a late winner at Badgers. Despite leading by a solitary Jason Dolby goal at half time, the home side should have gone into the break with the game already won bar the shouting. However, striker Luke Tanner spurned three excellent opportunities while other half chances were not taken. After the break a couple of lapses in concentration enabled Englefield to equalise after 52 minutes
After an edgy start to the game, Cray dominated the majority of the first half and it wasn’t a surprise when Dolby headed home a long throw from Joe Matthews after 29 minutes. Tanner should have doubled the lead when despite finding the space in the visitor’s box he failed to hit the target on three separate occasions. It was a shame because Tanner’s all round play was outstanding and he was a constant threat to the visitors defence.
With Cray pushing for the winner, the visitors hit them with a classic counter attack. Only 5 minutes remained when full back Nathan Taylor (who had converted to left midfield!) found himself alone and sprinted from the half way line unchallenged to slot calmly past the advancing Carthy.
A bad day at the office for Cray in their attempt to finish above Lordswood in their first season in the League!
